CHANGE YOUR LIFE USING THE 90/10 FORMULA

Thursday, 07 July 2005

I received a chain email from a friend about this article which says that we do not have control over only 10 percent of our life. The rest of our life, that is the 90 percent part of it is something we can manage. This article is said to have been written by Stephen Covey but I am not sure. Anyway, read on, you could apply the formula to CHANGE YOUR OWN LIFE...

CHANGE YOUR LIFE : THE 90/10 FORMULA

What is the 90/10 Principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you.
90% of life is decided by how you react.
What does this mean?
We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.
We cannot stop the car from breaking down.
The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off.
A driver may cut us off in traffic.
We have no control over this 10%.
The other 90% is different.
You determine the other 90%.
How? By your reaction.

You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction.
Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react. Let's use an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family.
Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened.
What happens during the rest of the day will be determined by how you react over the next 30 seconds.
You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.
She breaks down in tears.
After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table.
A short verbal battle follows.
You storm upstairs and change your shirt.
Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast to catch the school bus.
She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work.
You rush to the car and drive your daughter to her school.
Because you are late, you drive 70 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.
After getting a traffic summons and another 15-minute delay, you finally arrive at her school.
Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase.
Your day has started terribly.
As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse.
You look forward to coming home but when you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is D.
You had no control over what happened with the coffee.
How you reacted in those 30 seconds is what caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you.
Your daughter is about to cry.
You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time."
Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs.
After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus.
She turns and waves.
You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff.
Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.
Notice the difference?
Two different scenarios.
Both started the same.
Both ended different.
Why? Because of how you REACTED.

You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens.
The other 90% was determined by your reaction.
Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.
If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge.
Let the attack roll off like water on glass.
You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day.
A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?
Do you lose your temper?
Pound on the steering wheel?
A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off! Do you curse?
Does your blood pressure skyrocket?
Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work?
Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
You are told you lost your job.
Why lose sleep and get irritated?
It will work out.
Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.

The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day.
Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant?
She has no control over what is going on.
Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.
Why get stressed out?
It will just make things worse.

Now you know the 90-10 principle.
Apply it and you will be amazed at the results.
You will lose nothing if you try it.
The 90-10 principle is incredible.
Very few know and apply this principle.
The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache.
There never seem to be a success in life.
Bad days follow bad days.
Terrible things seem to be constantly happening.
There is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships.
Worry consumes time.
Anger breaks friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest.
Friends are lost.
Life is a bore and often seems cruel.
Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged.
You can be different!
Understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
It could change your own life.

THREE THINGS WE PROMISE YOU...
Friday, 07 April 2006

When you choose UNITAR and register with us, there are three things we always promise you and this we will never fail to deliver;

PROMISE NUMBER ONE:

We promise that all the programs and courses that are run at Institut Pengurusan Dinamik (Institute of Dynamic Management) are approved by the Sabah State Government, the Ministry of Education and by the National Accreditation Board (LAN). We promise that will not run courses that are not approved.

We understand that all academic programs must also be approved by the JPA (Department of Civil Service). As the process for approval from JPA takes time, we promise that if at the time of registration your program has not yet been approved by the JPA, we will definitely get this recognition and approval by the time you graduate and go for the convocation.

PROMISE NUMBER TWO:

We promise you that when you study at UNITAR, by the time you graduate, your level of English will have improved TREMENDOUSLY, sufficient to prepare you for job interviews and clinch that job. Reason: This is because the UNITAR system uses English one hundred percent from start to finish. Of course, if your English is not good after you left school, in the beginning you will find it quite tough and very challenging but after a while you will adjust to the environment and will want to improve yourself to catch up with the pace at UNITAR.

PROMISE NUMBER THREE:

We promise you that when you study at UNITAR, within four weeks after registering, your level of IT knowledge is so great that you will surprise yourself. You will be using the computer and the internet everyday of your study at UNITAR. Reason: This is because the UNITAR delivery system relies heavily on the computer and internet technology. At the heart of the UNITAR system is the VOISS, which means Virtual Online Instructional Support System. UNITAR is the first university in Malaysia which has succeeded in promoting the use of e-learning in its delivery system.

Wanna know something?..... When we promise something, we will deliver. That makes us different from everybody else.

THESE ARE THE THREE IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT EMPLOYERS AND INTERVIEWERS WILL LOOK FOR WHEN THEY INTERVIEW YOU AFTER YOU GET YOUR DEGREE.

If Tomorrow Never Comes Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 May 2006

A couple hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that until tomorrow, he said, which you can do today. This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more of us would listen to what he had to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I'd say it has a lot to do with fear.

Fear of failure. Fear of pain. Fear of rejection. Sometimes a fear is just of making a decision because what if you're wrong? What if you're making a mistake you can't undo? And you thought I was speaking metaphorically?

The early bird catches the worm. He who hesitates is lost. We can't pretend we haven't been told. We've all heard the proverbs, heard the philosophers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted times, heard the poet urges us to seize the day, still, sometimes we have to see for ourselves, we have to make our own mistakes, we have to learn our lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore.

Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin meant. That knowing is better than wondering. That waking is better than sleeping. And that, even the biggest failure, even the worst most intractable mistake beats the hell out of never trying
