DR. MORNI KAMBRIE; A SELF MADE MAN

Dr. Morni is Adjunct Professor of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), receiving the award in October 2002. He was born in Miri in 1956. His education spans several schools in Sarawak and culminated in St. Joseph Secondary School, Kuching, where he completed Form Five in 1973 and on to Kolej Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang in Miri for the Form Six Upper in 1975.Dr. Morni has a Chartered Institute of Transport (CIT) qualification as well as the Advanced Diploma in Transport Studies of the University of London. He went on to Scotland to do the MBA from Stirling University. His last achievement is the Ph.D in Entrepreneurship which he did at Stirling University, Scotland in 1990.

Dr. Morni's career started as a contract lecturer with UiTM in 1980, after which he joined Petronas (Kuching office) for 3 years between 1981 and 1984. In PETRONAS Kuching, he was Marketing Executive for Retail Sales Development. He left Petronas to start his own business in the middle of 1984 and then furthering his studies overseas in Scotland.

Upon returning from his Ph.D in 1990, Dr. Morni joined SEDC Sarawak for a few months before being seconded to the Chief Minister's Office for 2 years until 1993 as Special Administrative Officer to the Sarawak Chief Minister. Under this portfolio, he was responsible for managing the Chief Minister schedules, programs and visits and other administrative matters related to the office. In mid 1993, he returned to Sarawak Economic Development Corporation to fill the post of Director of the Tourism and Leisure Division for a while and later he headed the BCIC Division. His biggest achievement in the BCIC Division was his success in the recovery of long overdue debts totaling more than RM2 million.

Between 1994 and 1995, Dr. Morni was engaged as international consultant to the Philippine Government. This project was called "Growth with Equity in Mindanao" (GEM) and was funded by the Louis Berger Corporation of USA. The whole project was under the direct control of Senator Paul Dominguez, who, until now, is the Presidential Adviser for Rural Development for Mindanao.

Dr. Morni's main task was to act as consultant for Enterprise Development of the Muslim Minority Areas of Southern Philippines. This was before the Philippine Government started its peace negotiations with the MORO Liberation Front under Nur Misuari in 1996.

Besides the above, Dr. Morni was engaged as part time lecturer from time to time. He has lectured with UiTM, and several other universities such as Edith Cowan University, Australia, Bath MIM MBA programme and UNIMAS.

He now owns majority shares in the Institut Pengurusan Dinamik Sabah and Sarawak which runs degree and diploma programmes for Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR).

Dr. Morni has been invited to present lectures for Shell in Miri, MLNG in Bintulu, Yayasan Sabah, Sabah Government, SEDCO, Bintulu Development Authority, Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan, Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, DBKU in Kuching, private corporate bodies and a host of other organizations, conferences and symposiums both in Malaysia and abroad.

He is married to Associate Professor Dr. Fatimah Bujang, Deputy Director of UiTM Sarawak campus and they have 5 children. His hobbies are singing, cooking and deep sea fishing.
